Sustainability Frameworks: Biomimicry

In my personal opinion, the Biomimicry framework is the best. This seems to be the most effective framework to me because it starts from the bottom up. Biomimicry is said to be a process that “re-imagin[es] the design and development process”.  This technique takes into consideration what nature is and does and tries to mimic these natural processes.  This is an extremely smart and efficient way to go about the manufacturing process because nature has proven to us that its’ tactics work, and work well, so we can follow by example and know exactly how it works and why it does. As stated in earlier models, companies must change the way they view waste, and biomimicry makes this very easy to do.  Everything that is created in nature is then recycled back into nature, sometimes better than the original product. By viewing even the waste as a usable product, you are allowing yourself to use more of what you make, not discard useful outputs, and save the environment from the “waste” that you would have originally thrown away.

One aspect of the biomimicry process that is already being implemented are solar powered energy sources.  This mimics the way plants use the sun as a source of energy and brings this process into our lives to help reduce the use of electricity.

One issue that this framework might have for companies is that it seems more like an idea or a way to look at nature and gain inspiration instead of a concrete framework with thought out steps and processes.  A company would need to do an extreme amount of research to start from scratch to implement these ideas, which would likely cost time and money.  However, if a company is devoted to being sustainably, they will eventually reap the rewards from the products they sew.
